Our Recruitment Philosophy
Legal Recruitment is a unique field. Lawyers are highly intelligent, highly trained and often highly specialised and commercial. Likewise, law firms and corporates who hire lawyers can have very specific technical needs. Crucial to the success of the recruitment process is understanding the goals and needs that both the employer and the employee have and the ability to determine if the fit is right. While it is fundamental that the lawyer has the right skills to perform a particular role successfully, we also focus on whether the role is right for the lawyer, in the short and long term. We also pay close attention to the lawyer’s interpersonal skills, personality and aspirations.
We like to get to know our lawyers. We believe that by getting to know our lawyers as individuals we can better serve employers. Lawyers are trained to argue their position, so as a general rule we don’t undertake formal interviews with lawyers where we grill them with predicable questions which they can respond to with predictable answers. Instead we “interview” them by taking the time to chat with them over a coffee on neutral ground, where they can hopefully feel confident in being open and honest with us. We allocate more time and effort to getting it right than to getting it done.
We are flexible, creative, professional, accountable and accessible. We have set up interviews for back-packing Australian lawyers in remote Indonesia, chased referees in London in the middle of the night, streamlined graduate recruitment programs, designed on-line application sites, merged smaller practices into larger firms, made presentations to large groups of overseas junior lawyers on the benefits of working in Australia, given career advice to undergraduates, counselled managing partners and assisted in referring legal work to a number of our clients. We give our lawyers our mobile numbers and answer our phones in person. Our lawyers are reference checked at the appropriate time and we offer a replacement guarantee.
We are commercially minded. We understand the realities of doing business and are keen to come up with commercial solutions to aid recruitment. We don’t operate on one methodology only and can adapt it to suit both our employer clients and our lawyers’ individual needs.
