About Our Client
Our client is a prominent family-owned Australian business with substantial interests across retail, franchising, property development/construction and private investments.
Operating in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment, the group is focused on growth, operational excellence and long-term value creation. The business is seeking to add an experienced General Counsel to provide strategic legal leadership, manage risk and support key commercial initiatives across the portfolio.
The Role/Position Overview
The role will suit a highly experienced, decisive and commercially astute General Counsel with the ability to handle a range of diversified matters across retail, property/construction, franchising and other private client areas. The successful candidate will combine strong technical legal expertise with commercial acumen, initiative, the ability to negotiate and hustle to get results.
While regulatory awareness, good commercial drafting skills and risk management are required, the successful applicant will also be adept at litigation management and have the tenacity to hunt down solutions without waiting to be directed. The role requires strong personal ability to manage yourself, drive outcomes, prioritise manage external law firms and a strong combination of legal/litigation understanding coupled with working in commercial business environments and the street smarts to bring that knowledge to businesses you will support.
This greenfields GC role will offer the incumbent the opportunity to have a seat at the table of a well-known national retailer, and to work directly with the CEO on a broad range of matters including acting as GC and working across all businesses, other interests and legal matters.
The Lawyer we Seek
This role will suit a broad commercial lawyer with a minimum of 10+ years of post-admission experience covering key areas such as commercial negotiations and drafting, property, regulatory experience, franchising, litigation management and supervision of external firms.
The Benefits
In addition to a competitive package commensurate with experience, this role represents a highly visible leadership role in the business, with direct access to key decision-makers. A greenfields role, it offers the chance to shape the legal function from the ground up, and to play a key role in a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment.
